Edalat (Adalat) Nasibov - Ashiq from Azerbaijan - A private cassette from a private concert

Before proceeding to Afghanistan on our journey towards Pakistan and India, we post one more cassette by Edalat Nasibov, the brilliant Ashiq from Azerbaijan. I just discovered it a couple of days ago in my collection. So in order to complete our posts on Edalat Nasibov here it is. 

I vaguely remember that I received this cassette in the early 1990s from an Iranian musician and owner of a gallery for old nomadic carpets in Cologne, Germany. 

My friend KF made many years ago a CD out of this cassette and created nice covers.

Musiqi-e Milal-e Musalman - Music of the Islamic People: India, Pakistan, Tajikistan and the Republic of Azerbaijan - A box of six cassettes released in Iran in 1996

On the 9th of August 2018 we posted two cassettes out of this box. Now we have the complete box again and decided, to post it. The post of 9th of August we have deleted.

This box was published by the same organization as the series of 18 albums "Local Iranian Music", each containing six cassettes, from which we posted up to now only the volume on Baluchestan. We plan to post in the future some of the volumes on Khorasan.

Bismillah Khan needs no introductions as he is one of the most popular classical Indian musicians with a very long carrier and countless LP and CD releases.

Vol. 2: Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - Pakistan

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan also doesn't need any introduction being worldwide the most widely known traditional artist from the Orient and Asia. There are around 200 CD releases by him.

Vol. 3: Adina Hashemov - Tajikistan

Adina Hashemov is in the west hardly known at all, but in Tajikistan he is one the most popular folk music singers. The only release in the west is to my knowledge a 21 minutes long track on a CD published by the Belgian label Fonti Musicali: Tadjikistan - Musiques Populaires du Sud (1991).

Vol. 5: Davlatmand Kholov - Tajikistan (2)

Davlatmand Kholov is a well known and in Tajikistan very popular artist, who created a new national, so called "classical" music, based on the music of Badakhshan. His goal was to replace the real classical music which is the Shashmaqam and the Maqam of the Ferghana Valley and which are in Tajikistan the same as the ones performed in Uzbekistan, the only difference being that in Tajikistan the poems are in Tajik (Persian). But Davlatmands music is still folk music and can't compare with the real classical Maqam music in its refinement and greatness. There are three CDs by Davlatmand, one by the French label Inedit, another, more recent one by the Russian label Long Arms Records and a double CD on the Iranian label Barbat, performing together with some Iranian musicians.

Vol. 6:Alim Qasimov - Azerbaijan

Alim Qasimov again is a widely known traditional artist who toured a lot in the west and has quite a number of CD releases published in France, Germany and the US. He is considered one of the greatest voices in the world. We had only few posts with him up to now. Here he is accompanied by Malik Mansurov on Tar and Elshan Mansurov on Kemenche.

Ashug (Ashiq) Yunis Hasanov - Folk Songs of Azerbaijan - LP released in Soviet Azerbaijan in 1979

Here we present - for comparison with our two earlier posts of Edalat Nasibov - a traditional Ashiq from Azerbaijan, accompanying himself on Saz. Normally the texts are in Ashiq music, as in these recordings, the most important part. It becomes quite evident here how innovative and creative Edalat Nasibov was.

Ashiq Edalat Nasibov - Anonymous Cassette from the 1980s

Here another, even more fantastic recording by Edalat Nasibov. This is the rip of a cassette, which our friend Werner Durand copied in the 1980s from the collection of his Ney teacher.

Ashiq Edalat Nasibov - Great Master (Ostad) of the Saz of Azerbaijan - Majlis (private concert) in Baku in 1989 - Cassette released in UK

We just received from our dear friend Werner Durand the rip of a cassette by Edalat Nasibov, the outstanding master (Ostad) of the Saz of Azerbaijan. Edalat Nasibov is probably the greatest master of this instrument in recent decades, playing a very virtuosic instrumental version of the music of the Ashiqs of Azerbaijan, next to Mugham the other great musical tradition in this country. Occasionally he sings also.

The French label Ocora released in 2003 a CD by him under the title: Edalat Nasibov - L'Art du Saz - The Art of the Saz. The CD was recorded by Jean During.

"With innovative instrumental techniques of fingering and tuning and a richly ornamental style, virtuoso sàz lute performer Edalat Nasibov plays tunes which explore the art of the âshyq (Azerbaijani bards whose golden age lasted from the 15th to the 16th centuries)." from the backside of  this CD.

The artist was born in 1939 and passed away in September 2017.

Habil Aliyev (1927-2015) - Playing of Habil Aliyev - Zabul Tesnifi, Çargah Tesnifi, Segah Tesnifi, Dogah Tesnifi - LP released in Soviet Azerbaijan in 1976

Here a wonderful LP by the great master, accompanied on Balaban, a double-reed wind instrument similar to the Armenian Duduk, which has here the function to provide a drone, played by N. Alakhverdiyev, and on Naqara, a kettle drum, played by Ali Amiraslanov. The Duduk is sometimes used to provide a drone in Azerbaijani Mugham music.

Habil Aliyev (1927-2015) - Kemencheh from Azerbaijan - Folk Tunes - Cassette released in Iran probably in the late 1980s or the 1990s

Here another cassette by Habil Aliyev. This one has folk tunes and at the end some imitations of animals. He is accompanied here by the Iranian musician Arjang Kamkar on Tombak. Perhaps someone can provide a translation of the liner notes.

Habil Aliyev (1927-2015) - Kemencheh from Azerbaijan - Bayat-e Shiraz, Dogah & Segah - Cassette released in Iran probably in the late 1980s or the 1990s

Here a beautiful cassette by the great Habil Aliyev, perhaps the greatest Kemenche master of the 20th century. I still remember vividly the moment, in the 1970s, when I first really became aware of the magic of his music: I had the old Bärenreiter Unesco LP Azerbaijan on my record player and had fallen asleep for a moment and woke up to the sound of his Kemenche. In the first moment I didn't know where I was and was just completely amazed about the sounds of this exquisite music which I perceived as the two voices of lovers in an extremely intimate conversation which went directly deep into my heart.

The cassette contains on side 1: Bayat-e Shiraz and on side 2: Dogah & Segah.

In 2015 we had posted an LP by him. Next we will post another cassette released in Iran and then another LP from 1976.

Mirror and Song - A collection of 28 cassettes of regional and religious music of Iran published in Iran, recorded in 1994 - Cassette 1: Ashiq Music of Eastern Azerbaijan

This is one of several collections of regional music produced in Iran in the last 20 years. Whereas other collections, like Gosan Parsi - Some Examples Of The Melodious Tale In Iran (15 volumes), Bakhtyari Music (15 volumes) and Iran Epic Music (23 volumes) have been republished - or directly published - on CD, this collection exists only on cassette. A couple of years ago the Iranian label Barbad had announced an edition on CD, but it never saw the day. Recently the legendary Iranian label Mahoor started to publish some of these recordings on single CDs in their "Regional Music of Iran" series, but it doesn't seem, that there ever will be the complete series on CD. 

Mirror and Song was produced and edited by Mohammad Reza Darvishi (born 1955). Mohammad Reza Darvishi is an extremely creative and productive composer of film music, music researcher, especially in the domain of regional music of Iran, and book author. He has produced dozens of excellent CDs and cassettes and written over a dozen of books on regional and classical Iranian music. He also organized several festivals of regional music, mostly in Tehran. Most of the collections on cassette or CD are recordings from these festivals. In this way he did an enormous work in making regional musical forms of Iran known to a bigger public and saving the music from extinction.

This collection is especially interesting as it contains a.o. different forms of ritual music like Sufi Dhikrs etc. of which no other recordings exist, as far as I know.

We will, step by step, post this complete collection, hopefully about one cassette per day.

Regarding the names of the musicians, I'm only able to decipher the names of musicians I know: here we have on side A in the first two tracks the wellknown Saz virtuoso Imran Haydari and on side B in the first track a famous Ashiq: Ashiq Rasul Ghorbani. The other names I'm not able to decipher completely.

Azerbaijan refers in this series to the Iranian province Azerbaijan, not the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Bahram Mansurov (1911-1985) - Tar - Azerbaijanian Mugams - LP published in Soviet Azerbaijan in 1974

Here we present another LP by the great Tar player Bahram Mansurov of whom we posted already two other LPs: see here and here. This LP here has partly the same tracks as the one published by Unesco. Apparently they took the recordings from existing Melodiya LPs. On this LP here the tracks on side 1 are identical with the tracks 5, 6 & 1 on the Unesco LP and tracks 1 & 3 on side 2 with tracks 7 & 3 on the Unesco LP. Only tracks 3 & 4 are new. Bahram Mansurov was also present on the two previous posts of Azerbaijanian Mugam.
