Kalamandalam Piyal Bhattacharya has researched the texts of Bharata Muni’s Natya Sashtra and has been working on the practical reconstruction
of Bharata's dance and music tradition of the Natyashastraic period for over 25 years.
In 2010, he was awarded a fellowship from Sangeet Natak Akademi. In 2011 he received a fellowship from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
He was awarded the prestigious grant for “Safe Guarding the Intangible Cultural Heritage of India”, in 2014 - 2015.
His work to reconstruct the ancient Indian veenas (harps) from Myanmar, was supported by the Sangeet Natak Akademi in 2015 - 2016.
Shri Piyal Bhattacharya has been conferred with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award 2023 in the field of
‘Other Major Traditions of Theatre – Sanskrit Theatre’.
